In a few weeks, we will begin the newest cohort of Adult Hebrew & B’nei Mitzvah learners. This program is close to my heart, as I was a “late bloomer” with respect to my Bat Mitzvah. As a child, I was quite rebellious and spent much of my time at Religious School in the principal’s office for clowning around! It was so bad that I quit Religious School at age 12, without having had a Bat Mitzvah.

It was only years later that I decided to give it another try. By that time I had married my husband, who at the time was not Jewish. When we joined a synagogue, he decided to take the Adult Hebrew class so that he could better understand what was going on in services. He had so much fun! After a few weeks, it was clear that he was now keeping up in services better than I was. So I joined the class.

I didn’t actually realize until later that it was part of an Adult B’nei Mitzvah group, but by the time I figured it out, I was having a ball and had become totally committed. (Imagine my parents’ surprise!) Along the way, I became pregnant with my first son, and kept up my studies as my belly grew.

The group I learned with became like a family, and when I became a Bat Mitzvah, alongside my husband, with our 6-month-old son sitting on my mother’s lap in the congregation, it was quite an experience.

The TOS group begins its journey on October 24. Hebrew classes meet on Saturday mornings at 9am for one hour and will be taught by congregant Mindy Berman. Following the five weeks of Hebrew study, the B’nei Mitzvah study, taught by our Clergy, will begin on December 5. If you’ve never had a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, or if you’d just like to brush up your Hebrew and see what happens, please join the class! Contact Naomi Fisher to sign up.
